Smiley Lewis

Smiley Lewis, born Milton Lewis on July 5, 1913, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was a significant figure in the rhythm and blues genre, particularly during the 1940s and 1950s. His career took off after he signed with the legendary record label Imperial Records. Lewis is best known for his hits such as "I Hear You Knocking" (1955), "One Night" (1956), and "Tutti Frutti" (not to be confused with Little Richard's famous version), which showcased his distinctive vocal style and energetic performances. Lewis's music typically combined elements of R&B, jazz, and New Orleans rhythm, making him a pivotal influence on the transition from jump blues to rock and roll. His song "I Hear You Knocking" was later famously covered by Dave Edmunds in the 1970s, contributing to its enduring legacy. Although he never achieved the same level of mainstream fame as contemporaries like Fats Domino or Little Richard, Lewis's work has been recognized for its significant role in shaping the sound of early rock and roll. Lewis continued to perform until the 1960s before his health declined. He passed away on July 7, 1966, but remains an important figure in the history of American music.
